Oral Histories

La Jolla is an immensely dynamic community with a rich history. Since 1963 the La Jolla Historical Society (LJHS) has been working to preserve and share the community's heritage and culture. In an effort to continue that commitment, the Society will be introducing a new Oral History Program in 2008 as a means of documenting La Jolla's past and present. Oral histories provide rich sources of information that usually do not exist in any other form. Interviews conducted through the new program will utilize new standards and technology. The interviews will be recorded on videotape and will include transcripts and finding aids that allow easy access to the material.

The purpose of the Oral History Program is to collect and transcribe oral histories, to retain transcripts and tapes, and to make the content of the collected oral histories available to the general public through both collections access and complementary programming. A continuing program, the initiative occasionally will be tailored to topical themes in cooperation with organizational programming, such as exhibitions or education.
