Revelle Family Generously Donates Wisteria CottageDuring a reception Friday evening, July 25th for the opening of the La Jolla Historical Society’s By the Beautiful Sea exhibition, Ellen Clark Revelle made a surprise announcement that she and daughter, Mary Revelle Paci were donating the Wisteria Cottage and surrounding property to the La Jolla Historical Society and the community.
Mrs. Revelle, widow of UCSD founder Roger Revelle and namesake of her great-aunt, Ellen Browning Scripps, noted that Miss Scripps would want the Historical Society to own the home so that the community could continue to enjoy it. The Society plans to renovate the three properties on the 24,000 square-foot lot into a museum, education center, archives, and venue for special events.
Society executive director John Bolthouse said, “Owning this great historic property knowing that the Society will be here in perpetuity means the possibilities for our future as an organization dedicated to the community’s heritage are endless as is our gratitude.”
Thanks to the generosity of donors to the Society’s ongoing $2 million “Partners in History” capital campaign, initial renovation of the Cottage is underway. The original hardwood floors throughout the Cottage have been refinished to their original luster, and the walls repainted for the exhibition.
