(October 19, 2007) - La Jolla Historical Society Executive Director, John Bolthouse announced the hiring of Kara West as its new part-time Archivist. With the filling of this position, Bolthouse also announced that effective November 1st the Society will expand its public hours to 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
West, a recent graduate of San Jose State University with a Masters of Library and Information Service, will help develop programs for exhibits, educational outreach, and train volunteers in Collections. Her most recent experience includes Amylin Pharmaceuticals as Archivist and the Balboa Art Conservation Center as Registrar.
"The La Jolla Historical Society's archival collection is one of the most important assets the Society holds," Bolthouse said. "As the Society's public profile grows, we expand our operational goals, and we prepare for our eventual move into our new home in the historic Wisteria Cottage, it was paramount that we find a professional archivist to direct the care of our collections."
Bolthouse added that Kara's extensive experience in archives and exhibits development clearly made her the most highly qualified candidate to lead the Society's collections-related efforts for the future. He further added that Kara would become full-time when funding permitted.
In addition, because of the Society's growth forecast under Bolthouse's leadership, including the expanded public hours, he said the Society welcomes more volunteers to help with Archives.
The Society's offices and archives are located at 7846 Eads Avenue, La Jolla, in the 1909 beach cottage that was moved to its present location behind Wisteria Cottage in 1981. Open to the public Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm.(Effective 11/1/06) (858) 459-5335. www.ljhs.org.
