(April 4, 2007) - Taking advantage of the typical glorious spring and summer weather, the La Jolla Historical Society has created a lovely walking tour allowing visitors and residents alike to explore all the treasures La Jolla has to offer.
Approximately 20 blocks in length and an estimated walking time of an hour and thirty minutes, this self-guided Tour with 15 stops is designed to offer insight into La Jolla's rich and varied past, architecture and culture of the village, including walk-bys of some of the earliest houses dating back to the 1890s, and cliff and rock formations along the oceans dating through the millenniums.
"We created the tour in response to requests," Archivist Kara West said. "We envision this self-guided tour as the kick-off for a series of walking and driving tours. During the brainstorming phase of this tour, we quickly realized La Jolla has so many noteworthy stops that more tours are destined to be created."
West noted some of the Tours being planned for the future include an architectural tour of the Village, historic homes, a coastal walk showcasing La Jolla's natural environmental features, and a driving tour of the many Churches.
"We are even considering offering guided tours once we launch a docent program," West said. The La Jolla Historical Society welcomes volunteers with all backgrounds and experiences. West credits volunteer Louis Vener for assisting with the new walking tour.
A beautifully detailed guide and map with directions to each property contains a wonderful insiders description and history of the building or property featured. The brochure may be purchased at the Society's offices for $5.99 and is discounted for members. For more information please contact the Society at (858) 459-5335.
