(July 14, 2008) – The La Jolla Historical Society has announced it has received its first grant from the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation, allowing for the purchase of new donor management software vital to its growing operations.
“This is the first grant the La Jolla Historical Society has been awarded by the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation,” said John Bolthouse, the Society’s executive director. “Given the rich heritage of the Scripps family, we are truly honored to be part of the Scripps legacy of giving and grateful for the confidence the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation has in the Society and its plans for the future,” Bolthouse said.
The grant is the culmination of work in recent years by the Society and the Foundation to build a relationship of philanthropic support.
“We’re excited with the direction the Society is taking,” Bolthouse said, “and we’ve been working hard to convey our vision to the community and our growing list of valued supporters.”
Foundation Executive Director Doug Dawson refers to this grant award as the beginning of an important partnership between two organizations vital to life in La Jolla.
“We look forward to working together to promote a greater understanding of the amazing history of our community, which will provide the road map for our future,” Dawson said. “The La Jolla Historical Society is an invaluable resource for preserving the incredible history of La Jolla.”
Bolthouse said the histories of the two organizations are intertwined. “With the incredible legacy of community and philanthropy that Miss Scripps left us, a major part of the Society’s mission is to preserve her legacy and that of her family. The fact that we are located on part of the family’s historic property makes this gift all the more special. The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation is supporting our capacity building efforts, allowing us to more effectively pursue some ambitious plans for the future.”
