(October 23, 2008) – At a time when most women were compelled to be homemakers, Lilian Rice decided to become a maker of homes. Often overlooked by Southern California architecture scholars, Rice was a master architect who supervised the development of Rancho Santa Fe during the 1920s and designed several unique homes in La Jolla.
On Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 6:30 pm in the historic Wisteria Cottage guest lecturer Diane Y. Welch, author of the upcoming book Lilian J. Rice Lost Architect, will offer an intimate look at this remarkable award-winning female architect who made an impact in an otherwise male-dominated profession. In addition, Welch will present the compelling thirty-minute documentary depicting Rice’s life, along with a slide show featuring samples of Rice’s body of work.
Many of La Jolla’s Rice-designed homeowners will also be in attendance offering a first-hand glimpse into these unique homes.
