New Science Lecture Series Set For January Launch

Distinguished Guest Lecturers will discuss La Jolla’s prominent technology role

Since the early 60’s, the community of La Jolla has combined surf with science with mankind as its beneficiary.  Salk, Revelle and Scripps are legendary names in biotechnology and their heritage evolved into three of the most respected and recognized academic institutions in the world.  As a result many major biotechnology and telecommunications firms made La Jolla their address offering a rich environment for both scientists and engineers.

The La Jolla Historical Society is proud to present an exciting new lecture showcasing La Jolla’s role in science and technology.  Experience the unique opportunity to hear from those who were eyewitnesses of those early days, and those still on the cutting edge during the Society’s first series entitled The Emergence of Pioneering Scientific Institutions in La Jolla.

Society board member, Constance Branscomb, developed the scientific lecture series.  “This series should give all of us a better understanding of how and why our community has developed into such a scientific and high-tech powerhouse – one that cities around the world try hard to replicate,” Branscomb said.

The three-part series offered monthly beginning in January is free to La Jolla Historical Society members, and $15 per lecture for non-members.  All the lectures, followed by a question and answer opportunity, will begin at 7:00 p.m, at St. James Hall, 7776 Eads Avenue, La Jolla.
