School Days: Celebrating the Past and Exploring the Future of La Jolla High Schools

The La Jolla Historical Society presents its Winter 2010 Lecture Series

Conjuring up those golden memories of school days while discovering what awaits those students yet to come, the La Jolla Historical Society is proud to announce its new series of lectures this winter beginning in January focusing on La Jolla’s prestigious secondary schools. Conducted on-site, School Days: Celebrating the Past and Exploring the Future of La Jolla’s Schools features speakers from The Bishop’s School, La Jolla High, and La Jolla Country Day and its predecessor, The Balmer School.

At 7pm on Tuesday, January 26th Alison Adams Royle, ’57; faculty member, Mary Jane Sutherland, and newly installed 11th head of The Bishop’s School, Aimeclaire Roche, will give their unique perspectives about the past and where the school is headed in its second century in the Geier Presentation Hall of the Teitleman Science Center, 7607 La Jolla Blvd. An exhibit of the school’s history opens at 6:00 pm, followed by registration and a reception at 6:30 pm, before the lectures begin at 7pm.

Wednesday, February 24th at 7pm, La Jolla High School, recognized as a California Distringuished School, will feature Sandy Coggan Erickson, ’62, and founder of the Alumni Association; 1944 alumni and former faculty member, Harry Crosby, and the school’s principal, Dana Shelbourne beginning at 7pm in the Parker Community Auditorium, 750 Nautilus Street. The school’s strong tradition and history will be highlighted in an exhibit opening at 6pm, followed by registration and a reception at 6:30 pm.

Cynthia Balmer Coleman, whose mother founded the Balmer School – predecessor of the La Jolla Country Day School – will be featured along with long-time faculty member, Will Erickson and headmaster, Christopher Schuck, on Tuesday, March 16th for their presentation in the Multipurpose Room located in the the Jacobs Family Library/Academic Center, 9490 Genessee Avenue. A tour of the school begins at 6:00 pm, followed by registration and a short reception.

Reservations require advance payment of $10 per lecture for members, or $25 for the 3-part series for members. The non-member rate is $12 per lecture, or $30 for the series. Reservations may be made online at www.lajollahistory.org or by calling (858) 459-5335, ext. 1.
