Docent Program Introduced at La Jolla Historical Society

Fun, outgoing volunteers needed for expanding programs

Growing in leaps and bounds, the La Jolla Historical Society is introducing a docent-training program to support a host of exciting new programs and exhibits. The first training program is scheduled for Saturday, January 30th from 10am to approximately 2pm at historic Wisteria Cottage, 780 Prospect Street, La Jolla.

Archivist/Curator Michael Mishler will lead off the training with a brief introduction to the Society’s programs followed by a presentation of the benefits, expectations and opportunities for docents to help the Society build its exhibition and outreach programs.

Historian Carol Olten will offer an overview of our community’s history and our Docent Captains will lead tours of the current exhibit and the Society’s facilities including the new archive.

“Our goal with the docent program is to open Wisteria Cottage and our expanding exhibit programs to the public more often.” Mishler said. “To do this we need fun and outgoing people interested in learning and sharing the many facets of La Jolla’s history. Our volunteers and docents tend to lead interesting lives and many have formed lasting friendships by working together at the Society and we encourage all age groups, from students to retirees to join.

Docents will be specifically trained to lead tours of the exhibits and answer questions about La Jolla history in general. They will be offered the opportunity to participate in special Society events, lead group tours, and attend workshops and field trips to other local museums and historical societies.

Refreshments will be served. Reservations are required by contacting Mishler at (858) 459-5335, extension 3 or by signing up by email at volunteers@lajollahistory.org .
