School Partnerships
Creative Collaborations
At the La Jolla Historical Society, we believe in the power of collaboration to inspire the next generation of artists, thinkers, and storytellers. Our school partnerships engage students through exhibition-related projects, curated student showcases, and individualized collaborations tailored to classroom goals.
Whether contributing directly to current exhibitions or developing original work alongside local educators and artists, students gain meaningful, hands-on experience connecting history, art, and community. We welcome opportunities to build new partnerships and deepen our educational impact across San Diego.
Past Partnerships
Barona Charter School
Project: ’Ipay Maay (“Our People’s Sky”) (2025)
Exhibition: Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project
As part of a three-week partnership for our Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project exhibition, students dyed fabric and bleached in Kumeyaay constellations to create celestial-inspired artworks. Barona students also visited our gallery to help install their pieces, deepening their connection to the storytelling and exhibition process.
High Tech Middle Mesa
Project: ’Ipay Maay (2025) and Our Untold Stories (2025)
Exhibition: Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project
As part of our Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project exhibition, over 120 students came together to dye fabric in a "cosmos" color palette, contributing to a collaborative installation titled Ipay Maay (“Our People Sky”). These young artists also created original graphic novel stories inspired by Kumeyaay traditions, which are featured alongside the exhibition.
The Bishop’s School Student Showcase
Project: Bishop’s Visual Arts Community Pop-up Showcase
Exhibition: La Jolla Surf
Creativity meets local history! The La Jolla Historical Society collaborated with Bishop's visual arts community to host a pop-up art showcase. The exhibit included paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, mixed media and more by Bishop's students.
High Tech High Student Showcase
Project: Climate Resiliency Exhibition
Exhibition: Helen and Newton Harrison: California Work
In conjunction with our Getty-supported Harrison retrospective, Helen and Newton Harrison: California Work, we partnered with High Tech High Mesa on their Climate Resiliency Exhibition, created in collaboration with the Harrison Studio. Students explored environmental themes inspired by the Harrisons’ legacy, presenting innovative works that connected art, science, and climate action.
High Tech High Senior Student Externship
Project: Exterior Orchard (2024)
Exhibition: Helen and Newton Harrison: California Work
On June 4th and 5th, we welcomed eight High Tech High Mesa seniors for an externship focused on ecological design inspired by Helen and Newton Harrison. Guided by the Harrisons' vision, the students built planter boxes from original 1972 plans, applying their fabrication skills, creativity, and commitment to sustainability while reimagining how to approach the project in 2024.
